Victoria Falls is located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. It has been a symbol of Out of Africa romance for centuries. It is a must-do adventure into Africa’s heart to see the greatest natural wonders of the world. Here are five great reasons to visit the falls:
1. UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Victoria Falls and the ‘rainforests’ surrounding it. They have been designated as having outstanding universal value. This is due to the fact that the main waterfalls form the largest, most continuous falling water sheet in the world, twice as high and approximately 500m (1,640ft) wider than Niagara Falls. It is also impressive in terms of the volume of water: the entire annual consumption of New York City is estimated to pass over the falls in three-and-a half days during peak flood season, March and April. The water’s thundering force causes mist to rise from the ground and spray into the air. The locals call Victoria Falls Mosioa-Tunya’ meaning “the smoke that thunders”. This ‘smoke’ can be seen up to 50km/31mi.
You may be able to see the full moon during March-May if there is enough rain. The moonbow is created when water particles in the atmosphere refract light. It’s similar to a normal rainbow. Victoria Falls is open at the full moon on three nights. The best time to visit Victoria Falls is within the hour after the moon rises.
2. Zambezi River
One of Africa’s most important rivers is the Zambezi. It is the main river in the region, and forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The river’s sunsets and sunrises are stunning in their beauty. Ra-Ikane Sunset Boat Cruises on the River are a great way to see hippos and elephants as well as birds.
3. Adrenaline Activities
Vic Falls is the perfect place to get your adrenaline pumping. The most famous adrenaline activity is the 111m/364ft jump from the bridge over the falls into the Gorge. White-water rafting has also become very popular. This is a great activity to try, but make sure you go at the right season. White-water rafting can only be done from the end of August through December, when the water level is lower and thus safer.
A thrilling alternative activity is to swim in Devil’s Pool during low water months. This pool is perhaps the most stunning infinity pool on earth. You will feel like you are floating to the edge of the pool, where the water plunges into the canyon below. To ensure your safety, a guide will accompany you.
It’s easy to see why this place is Zimbabwe’s adrenaline capital.
4. Wildlife
The falls are easily accessible from Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls National Park in Zambia. These parks offer a wealth wildlife viewing opportunities including elephant, buffalo and lion, as well as a variety of antelope species such as sable and eland.
Ask about a day trip in Hwange National Park if you are keen on safari and wildlife experiences. It is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and it is only one hour from the Falls. Chobe National Park, in neighbouring Botswana is only 80 minutes away. It is well-known for its large elephant and buffalo herds. You can enjoy some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing in southern Africa at each park.
5. A Different Perspective
After you have seen Victoria Falls from up close, consider flying in a helicopter or microlight. The Falls will be breathtakingly visible from the air. The heli-flip allows everyone to take photos of the Falls from any position. You can attach your phone or camera to the microlight. You can attach the microlight to your body using a cable to ensure it doesn’t fall off if dropped.
