What exactly is Taweez?
The definition of Ta’weez is essentially “a Du’a that is written,” which comes from the Qur’an or Ahadith which is meant an option for anyone who cannot read or has not memorized the particular Du’a. It has been written onto a sheet paper and is worn by the neck.
We, the Ahle Sunnah believe, to wear a Taweez around the neck is permitted when the du’a that is contained in it is written out in Qur’an or Ahadith. Prophet Muhammad [May Allah blessing him, and grant peace] used to repeat du’a, and then blow on the person who was sick. The companions of the Prophet (may Allah blessings him, and bring him peace] did the same and the companions wrote the du’a on an article of paper and then placed it around the neck of that person if they could not be able to read the du’a. Of of course, the du’as found in that of the Qur’an and Ahadith can treat those who are sick. Many people believe that wearing the Taweez you are commiting shirk. But we can prove, with assistance of Allah Almighty that it is permitted to wear the Taweez.
Taweez’s evidence from Quran
The Qur’an has the power of healing
Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an
“…We are able to transmit through Qur’an that which is a healing and mercy for the believers …”
(Surah Bani Israeel Verse).
Qadi Shawkani wrote that If the Qur’an’s ‘du’as’ are recited and then blown onto those who are sick, they will be cured. When the non-believers recite the Qur’an the blasphemic disease will be cured. (Tafsir Fathul Qadir under Verse 82 Surah Bani Israeel).
Evidence of wearing the Taweez
1) Hafidhh ibn Kathir and Qadi Shawkani write:
Amr Ibn Shu’aib RadhiAllahu ‘anhu states that ‘RasoolAllah’ (Sallallahu alaihi wa salam) taught my father and grandfather a du’a we would read prior to bed, in order to shield us from fear and anxiety. We would instruct our children to recite this Du’a before going to sleep , too. For those who were not yet literacy-level then we would write it and then tie it around their necks.
(Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal vol.2, Abu Dawud in Chapter of Medicine, Tafsir by Hafidhh Ibn Kathir of verse 97 of Surah Al-Mu’minoon. Qadi Shawkaani in Fath-ulQadeer, under the same verse[Musnad Ahmad Ibn Hanbal vol.2, Abu Dawu
It is legal to read du’a and blow on the sick
2.) Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim writes:
When a person who was in a state of discomfort, they would seek out the Prophet [May Allah be with him, and give Him peace] who would then place his hand on the location of pain and recite du’a. He would then blow into him.
(Bukhari, Muslim chap on Tibb).
3) Imam Muslim writes:
The Prophet (may Allah be blessed and give him peace] fell sick for the last time, angel Jibreel [May Allah bless him and grant Him peace] came and performed du’a, and then blew his horn on to the Prophet (May Allah be blessed and give him peaceand grant Him peace]. (Muslim chapter on Tibb)
4) Imam Muslim writes:
Aisha (Radiall Hu Anhua) claimed that when the Prophet [May Allah blessing him, and give Him peace] was sick the previous time, she was able to recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah Al-Naas, and then gave a blow to the Prophet’s hands [May Allah Bless him and Grant Him peace]’s hands. When the Prophet was healed, he blew this onto his body and face, as his hands were blessed then Aisha’s (Radiall hu anha).
(Muslim chap (Muslim chap Tibb)
Based on the narrations above, it proves that to blow after reciting du’as to people who have been sick Sunnah as well. The more religious an individual is, the more healing powers he can have because they are blessed more than those who are less religious.
5.) Hafidhh Ibn Taymiyyah writes:
It is permitted to recite du’as, and thenblow on the sick in Islam however, the words must be from the Qur’an or Ahadith. If the words aren’t then it is not permissible.

FAQs about wearing Taweez
Q) Some people say, “How is it allowed to blow dua’s into sick people, when certain Hadith state that this is forbidden?”
Allama Sa’idi wrote the answer to this query in full detail he’s also put the opinion of all the other scholars of the world, and we will present this to you here.
Allama Gulam Rasool Sa’idi writes:
Imam Nawawi Rahmatullah’s Sharh Muslim says that there are two kinds of Ahadith regarding blowing. (Reciting a Du’a and then blowing onto a person.) One of the types is transmitted in Bukhari saying: ‘There are people who will enter Paradise without any questions they have not been blowing on’. Imam Muslim Rahmatullah Also, he has written a hadith for those who do no ask to be blown upon. Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah , in his chapter of Tibb (Medicine) writes written Du’as that the Prophet of our time [May Allah bless His name and grant Him peace] said when performing ‘Damm’ (Reciting a Du’a and then blowing onto a person). Imam Muslim Rahmatullah says in the chapter on the Virtues of Prophet Muhammad [May Allah bless Him and grant Him peace] that: when Our Prophet (May Allah bless Him and grant Him peace] was sick, the Angel Jibreel appeared to him and performed the blowing. The Ahadith mentioned above may appear to contradict each other but in reality there isn’t any contradiction.
The first type of Hadith is a reference to the prohibition of having read something that is not from the Qur’an and Sunnah [that is, it includes diagrams, pictures and words that are not in the Qur’anand then blowing onto the person. The latter types of Ahadith that permit Damm refer to those Kalimaat (words or passages) which have been revealed by the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give Him peaceThe Prophet [May Allah bless Him and grant Him peace]. As mentioned the previous paragraph, there are two kinds of Ahadith on Ta’weez. There are numerous sources which prohibit the use of Ta’weez but many also allow their use. The Imam Qurtubi Rahmatullah wrote in detail on both kinds of Ahadith on Ta’weez. most forbidden Ta’weez are the Ta’weez that were used in the age of ignorance, the ones that are Satanic and contain an aspect in Shirk’. (Mantar, Voodoo and Magic and so on.) The Ta’weez, which are permitted are those written with Du’as, which can be found in Qur’an as well as Ahadith only. Here are the narrations, which demonstrate that it is permitted for a person to put a Ta’weez around his/her neck.
Allama Alusi Hanafi in the Tafsir to the Qur’an wrote: According the Imam Malik Rahmatullah ‘It is permitted to wear around the neck the Ta’weez that is written in Allah’s name. Allah? Imam Baqir has also said that it’s permissible to put such a Ta’weez on the neck of children. [Rooh-ul-Ma’ani, chapter 15″ under the verse 97 from Surah Mu’minoon]
Allama Shami Hanafi Rahmatullah writes:
It is acceptable to write a Ta’weez and put it on the neck. He also states that it is preferential if a person recites the Du’as as taught by the Prophet (Sallallahu’ alaihi wa sallam.) But if a person cannot understand or has too little experience for reciting, then it is permitted to wear it on the neck
[Rud-ul-Mukhtar chapter Qirat, Sharah Sahih Muslim chapter on Tib by Allama Sa’idi].
To conclude it can be considered that the verses which contradict those of the Qur’an, Shari’ah, or the Sunnah are forbidden to read and also forbidden to be worn around the neck. For the Du’as as well as verses from those of the Qur’an and Sunnah it is permissible to be written and placed on the neck of a small child or an illiterate or an ill person.
