What is a DET Course?

DET also known as the Diploma in Education and Training previously known as the DTTLS (Diploma to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) It is a Level 5 professional training course approved and developed from the SET (Society for Education and Training). It is designed for students who work in an instructor in a part-time or full-time position. Following the successful completion of the training, candidates can earn an accredited qualified teacher Learning as well as Skills and status. This is a full-time teaching certificate that is earned through lifelong learning that is nationally recognized.

The DET qualification is comparable with it’s counterpart, the Certificate in Education that is included in the FHEQ (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications). It is classified as a Level 5 qualification with 120 credits. The diploma course is comprised of Part I and Part II and the student must have completed at minimum 100 hours of instruction prior to applying to this DET program.

Candidates will be evaluated throughout the course of two years in a continuous manner. Each module are assessed via assignments that include reports, projects or case studies, as well as essays. The 2nd year is mixed with class attendance and online assignments.

Admission Requirements for the DET Course

The entry requirements to the DET course are:

at least 100 teaching hours
GCSEs that are in English language or in Mathematics in Grades 9- 4 or in A*-C.
Level 3 skills or equivalent in the event that they are learning some classes in the teaching of literacy or numeracy.
Level 3 personal competencies that are based on English as well as Level 2 competencies in Mathematics.
You should have good IT skills and should be proficient with the most important Office tools, such as Word Processing, Presentation, and so on.

Additional Entry Requirements

The applicant must be able to access to at least 50 paid hours of teaching each year (voluntary could also be considered). The candidate should be teaching five groupings (on an occasion of more than 12) composed of students of different abilities and levels. A candidate should be required to be active as a tutor at least 3 months prior to registering for an DET course.
You must have filled out the application form and have proof of your qualifications.

You’ve attended an information or interview meeting in which you were provided with an initial literacy test.

A DET course provides students with at least 120 credits. These are divided into four units. If the student already has CTLLS or CET certification, the candidate is required to complete only three of the four units.

After you have completed an DET course, you’ll be qualified to teach in the field of lifelong learning and earn a decent income. There are numerous opportunities to go into the post-16 market without a teaching certificate although most employers need to see one. This DET course is recognized to be a requirement in the UK equivalent to the second semester of the Bachelor’s degree.

There is also the option of applying to be granted QTLS Status by contacting the Education and Training Foundation. Anyone with QTLS status as well as an Education and Training Foundation membership is automatically recognised as an experienced teacher.
