Study tips for your DSE chemistry exam

The chemistry exam is slated to occur on April twenty five, based on the existing HKDSE schedule. Do not worry, you will not miss out on crucial exam preparation due to the class suspension. Small Post requested Sam Chai, of i-Lab, for his techniques to sail through the papers.

Sam says there’s still need sufficient time to get ready for the exam. To get a great comprehension of chemical calculations as well as terminology, you have to go through your notes and textbooks. Just before you tackle examination papers from prior years, be sure you do this.

The chemistry DSE “is a topic based exam, and applicants must familiarise themselves with the application and fundamental ideas of formulas before attempting previous papers to be able to stay away from repeating typical errors,” Sam explains. “This could really help save you much more time.”

A great comprehension of the fundamentals is the primary key to success.

When you’ve perfected the concepts, Sam hints focusing on these questions from previous years’ papers:

Paper 1 Q7: Calculation of regular enthalpy modification of reaction.
Paper 1 Q12 is all about chemistry of carbon substances.
Paper 1 Q6: Hess’s Enthalpy change calculation and law.
2018, Paper one Question 11: Rate of response of formic acid and molecular bromine.
2019, Paper one Q8: Enthalpy change of neutralisation of HCI (aq NaOH and) (aq).
Paper 1 Q12 is all about the formula of exothermic reaction.

There are 3 topics in Paper one and Sam suggests spending more hours brush up on them.

Chemistry of equilibrium continuous Chemical cells, alkalis and electrolysis Acids and redox reactions.

He predicts the exam is going to include questions concerning the calculation of enthalpy alter, equilibrium frequent, and response of different functional groups in carbon substances.

In terms of Paper two, Sam says pupils will probably see thoughts about creating methanol; the Haber process: and the amount situation for “Industrial Chemistry”.

Regarding “Analytical Chemistry”, he suggests concentrating on the substance test for organic elements as well as ions; separating of mixtures; computation of redox titration; and also questions regarding infrared spectrometry as well as mass spectrometry.

Sam says pupils that get into an exam hall without an obvious understanding of concepts plus formulas make 2 main mistakes: they neglect to work with the information provided, & they’re powerless to deduce answers.

“Students are able to wind up losing a great deal of points because there is a domino effect whenever they have the very first component wrong,” Sam says. He says you must spend no over twenty five minutes on each component of Paper 1 and look at your answers at the conclusion.

For Paper two, he advises aiming to finish Part 1A (multiple choice questions) in forty five minutes, and leave ten minutes spare at the conclusion to proceed through their answers.
