The chief executive officer (CEO), relies on more general leadership and management abilities. Understanding the pros and cons of being a CEO will help you decide if this is a career you wish to pursue.

What does it mean to be a CEO?

Chief executive officers are responsible for everything in a company. He doesn’t manage the finance or sales departments. He is responsible for directing the creation of the company’s strategic goals and giving orders to those who work in the finance, IT, marketing, sales or production departments.

These goals may include diversification and expansion, new product developments strategies, downsizing, as well as a variety of financial strategy such cost-cutting, asset transfer, shareholder value initiatives and debt management. Of course, a CEO will often approve the tactics used by her employees to reach their strategic goals.

Benefits of the Job

Debra Benton, a career coach, says that one of the most important benefits of being a CEO is your autonomy. Although the board of director can give direction, it doesn’t always tell you how to do it. While you work with your board to create long-term strategies for the company’s future, it is up to you to decide the tactics. Your boss won’t make you feel guilty about being held back as a CEO.

ValiantCEO says that compensation is another major advantage to being a chief executive officer. The CEO is the most highly paid employee at a company. A base salary is not enough. You may also be eligible for a bonus or stock options. Other perks include a car, country club membership, free housing, and other perks.

CEOs can benefit from the publicity and stature that comes with being a chief executive. This results in more job opportunities and higher salaries. CEOs are generalists who focus on financial performance and can supervise a company that makes cars, restaurants, or tennis racquets.

Advantages of the Job

Taking on CEO jobs can make you more vulnerable than any other position. You are responsible for the company and cannot be blamed for others’ mistakes. Along with the professional pressure, there can be a lot personal pressure, long hours, and stress.
Preparing to Work

Except for small businesses, a CEO typically has an MBA and some experience as an executive in a division (often marketing or finance). While you can acquire these technical skills through education and experience, you will need to improve your soft skills in order to be successful in this job.

Soft skills can be defined as business-management skills that include interpersonal communications, leadership, analysis and project management. It is important to improve your public speaking skills as CEOs are often asked to give interviews and make presentations.
